Grammar Notes

1. Nouns Nouns are words that identify a person, place, or thing. They are used as subjects, objects, complements, and appositives, as well as to modify other nouns to form compound nouns.
- The manager allocated $5,000 for the project.
- Sam, a scientist, is our advisor on the new project.
- The ink for the printer is usually delivered in cardboard boxes. |
2. Pronouns
Pronouns are words that can replace other words, usually nouns, to make a sentence less repetitive.
- The committee members have not hired anyone because they cannot come to a decision.
- I gave Tony the documents for processing since he is the person responsible for them.
- I've come to pick up Janet’s laptop. Which one is hers?

3. Verbs Verbs are words used to indicate action or a state of existence, or to link the subject to additional Information about that subject.
- Several of the managers will attend the annual meeting.
- Interpreting data is very time-consuming.
- The recruits reported that the interviews were very difficult. |
4. Adjectives Adjectives are describing words that are used to complement or modify a noun.
- Mr. Jackson is excellent for the role of group leader.
- Please send the complete file by noon tomorrow.
- The newly expanded railway will open in September. |
5. Adverbs Adverbs can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Conjunctive adverbs connect phrases or clauses. They indicate manner, time, place, cause, or degree.
- We waited patiently for the results of the Internet auction.
- An application was received from a highly qualified‘candidate.
- Since the new chef began, the quality of food here is markedly better.
- Our customers had a few problems with the product. Firstly, they said it was too heavy.

6. Prepositions Prepositions link nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence. They are followed by a noun, pronoun, gerund, or noun clause.
- There was concern throughout the department when they heard the news.
- The client asked that notes from the meeting be sent to her.
- Remember to save your file before closing the program.
- Some employees are unsure about how to fill out this new form. |
7. Conjunctions Conjunctions connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences together.
- We are looking for someone who is experienced yet open to new methods.
- They. halted the project because they lacked funding.
- We will agree to the contract if all the terms are met. |
